Manticores are a quadrupedal species resembling lions covered in thick, bright red fur. Two subspecies of manticore exist, one having the head of a lion, the other a head similar to that of a human. All manticores have a variety of physical traits which allow them to act as efficient predators, possessing three sets of razor-sharp teeth, dislocatable jaws, and spines of various functions along their tails. The spines running the length of the tail are fatally toxic to any non-manticores, while the large bundle of spines at the very end of the tail are not toxic, but instead function identically to those of a porcupine, able to embed themselves into a target before dislodging.

Manticores are sentient and speak their own language, called Manticorsi. The spoken language incorporates whistles, trumpeting, flutes, and other sounds unique to the manticore's vocal range, while the written language is produced using their claws, teeth, and spines, which are capable of leaving gashes in dirt, wood, or even stone.

While not inherently aggressive or violent, manticores are considered dangerous, untrustworthy monsters, and do not have any medallions or method of shapeshifting in order to appear human. The stereotypes associated with manticores have caused most individuals to either keep to themselves, or live in almost complete isolation.

There are at least two manticores living in the Liverpool Avalon, however their names are unknown.
  • The only named member of the species is Ike Sanford, who is actually a manticore/buggane hybrid.
  • Ike's father is never seen but he was a manticore who became human through sorcery and fell in love with a disguised buggane
